People play drums and percussion in a circle while others typically dance inside the circle. A drum circle is usually a free public event that can be attended by anyone. There are no rules, except for mutual respect. People can join at any time, sit or stand in any location, and play what they want, when they want. If ecstatic dancing refers to dancing in pure improvisation, a drum circle is where there is drumming in pure improvisation as well. It's an ecstatic drum-dance event.
During a drum circle many
people report being in a “flow” state. This is a result of “entrainment” (for more on entrainment see
here).
People who attend drum circles include absolute beginner djembe players, toddlers, grandparents, dancers, and
of course great social diversity! Drum circles take place regularly in the same place, such as every full
moon or every Sunday at a park. The drum circle is quite possibly the oldest form of music making in a
group!
